History of the Hunt

Start Year: 0
End Year: N/A
History: Part of the country was hunted as the Enville by Lord Stamford until 1792. Sir Richard Puleston lived at Pattingham and hunted the Enville country. After Sir Richard Pulestons time the country seems to have been irregularly hunted until Lord Foley kept hounds. In 1830 a pack was started under the Mastership of Walter Giffard, with the patronage of the Earl of Stamford, and called the Albrighton. The hounds were presented to the Committee by Capt James Foster in 1916.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which extends some 35 miles north to south and 20 miles east to west, lies in Shropshire and Staffordshire. Best centres: Stafford, whence also is the North Staffordshire; Newport, whence the North Shropshire is accessible. The country north of the A5 is good scenting country lending itself to dairy and mixed farming with hedges and hunt fences; south of the A5 is mainly arable land with potatoes and sugar beet, thus spring stubble gives good galloping country across light ground. Scent generally improves in the latter part of the season allowing hunting into late March.
