History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1804
End Year: TBC
History: The Hunt dates from about 1804, when Mr Pullston hunted Gopsall, Burbage, Kingsbury, Wigginton, Middleton and Clifton, and Lord Vernon at Sudbury hunted up to Gopsall. The country as now constituted has existed since 1815, when Mr Osbaldeston established hounds at Witherley and confined his hunting to the Atherstone country. There was a reorganization in 1930 when Capt Edward Ramsden continued hunting the Northern Area from Witherley, and Reginald Wright established hounds at Cotesbach on the Fernie-Pytchley border to hunt the Southern Area. In 2019 there was initially a decision to close down the hunt, however it was not fully disbanded and some activities restarted again in 2020.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country extends some 24 miles from north to south and 18 miles east to west. From 1930 to 1950 it was divided into two sections, North and South, but is now reunited. The terrain is a mixture of arable and grass with some tough fences, mainly post and rails, but the hedges also require jumping, preferably by a bold horse. The country and often the going needs a fit horse but there are a selection of days that cater for the less experienced. Best centres: Atherstone and Nuneaton, in the middle of the country; Rugby in North Warwickshire country; Coventry on the North Warwickshire border; Lutterworth on the Pytchley border; Leicester and Ashby-de-la-Zouch on the Quorn border, and Tamworth on the South Staffordshire border, whence meets of the Atherstone. Adjacent packs: Meynell & South Staffs, Quorn, Fernie and Pytchley.
