History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1888
End Year: 2023
History: In 1888 the 8th Duke of Beaufort found his country too large and loaned the present Avon Vale country to Captain John Spicer of Spye Park, and loaned him the hounds to hunt the Country, known as Captain Spicers. After a few changes in 1912, the Avon Vale Hounds were formed with kennels at Semington, and Mr J S H Fullerton as Master. There was a succession of Masters over the next 30 years, including Captain Holland-Hibbert, later to become Lord Knutsford. In 1940, during the War, Captain Frank Spicer took the Mastership and moved the kennels to Spye Park, where hounds are still kennelled, in one of the most attractive kennels in the country.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country is in mid-Wiltshire and is about 30 miles by 25 miles in extent. It is bordered by the Duke of Beauforts to the north; the Mendip Farmers to the west; the Tedworth and the Royal Artillery to the east; and the South & West Wilts to the south. It consists mainly of dairy farms with some 85% grass, which ensures a good scent; 5% arable farms; and the remainder woodland. The fences are varied, with many formidable, comprising hunt fences, rails and hedges. The country is well fenced in all areas. A horse will have to be capable of taking fences as they come, for he will find he has enough to do when scent serves and hounds run on. He will have to be both well-bred yet adaptable and handy, for the Vale is trying ground. The country has much to commend it, as within its boundaries it has downland, hill and vale.

Updated

Last Updated: 2023-02-10 10:34:47
Reason for update: feb 2023 The governing body for hunting in the UK- the British Hound Sports Association-expelled the Avon Vale Hunt after a disciplinary panel found it revealed \\\"serious breaches\\\" of its core principals and rules. The BHSA panel reviewed a video which had been shared online and heard evidence from the joint masters, the acting chairman and the kennel huntsman of the hunt.
