History of the Hunt

History:	These hounds were first got together by J D Lang in 1879 and were known as the Sid Vale Harriers. Mr Lang hunted them himself until 1885, when they were disbanded, and given to Dr George Evans, of Seaton, who took them to save the hounds being put down. He formed a small committee and asked his friend John Impy Scarbrough to be Master. Mr Scarbrough did not hunt hounds; they were hunted by eight consecutive amateur huntsmen during his mastership of 36 seasons. He gradually increased the size of his hounds from 19 inches to 21 inches, and by out-crossing with the Cotley, Seavington and Pynsent Matthews hounds, bred the light-coloured west country harrier as it is known today. Hares are no longer hunted, as they are now scarce.
