History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1700
End Year: N/A
History: Hounds have been kept at Berkeley since the 12th century, at first to hunt the stag and the buck, but since the 18th century to hunt the fox. The Berkeley family still own the hounds and the kennels. Originally there were hounds kennelled at Berkeley, Cheltenham, Broadway, Nettlebed, Gerrards Cross and Cranford, Middlesex, but in the late 18th century and during the 19th century, much of the huge country was relinquished by the 5th Earl of Berkeley and his sons and grandsons, the Fitzhardinges. The parts around Cheltenham and Broadway became the Cotswold, North Cotswold and Cotswold Vale Farmers' Hunts. Sport has been consistently good over the years in this country steeped in hunting tradition. The yellow livery is the livery of the Berkeley family.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country lies in Gloucestershire between Bristol and Gloucester. Predominantly dairy with some arable. Country is bisected by blackthorn hedges with rhynes (drainage ditches), so a bold horse is required. In March the country on Cotswold Escarpment is hunted, which is rougher hill country with well established woodland.
