History of the Hunt

History:	The Hunt was founded in 1922 at the instigation of Mr Cuthbert Fitzherbert Brockholes, local landowner and Master of the New College & Magdalen, as the Oakenclough Beagles. This was a private pack, the property of the Jackson Brothers, hunting country dormant since the disbandment of the North Lancashire Basset Hounds in 1912, and the Kirkham Harriers whose 107 year existence was brought to an end, like so many other packs, by the effects of the Great War. The Hunt was re-formed under a committee in 1937, changing the name to Bleasdale and extending operations to hunt over the territories of the former Howgill Harriers, Eden Valley Beagles and the Sedbergh & District Beagles. During the Second World War and for a decade afterwards hounds were kennelled with the Kendal & District Otterhounds through the courtesy of the late Sir Maurice Bromley-Wilson, Bart. The Hunt now operates in accordance with the provisions of the Hunting Act 2004.

The country rises from the seashore to an altitude of 2,000 feet. It falls mainly in the stone wall, fell and moorland area between Preston and Penrith. Adjacent packs: Black Combe Beagles, Cumbria Beagles, Catterick Beagles, Weardale & Tees Valley Beagles, Airedale Beagles, Vale of Lune Harriers and Pendle Forest & Craven Harriers.
