History of the Hunt
The Hunt was founded in 1822 when the then Governor of the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset, brought the first pack to the Cape. In 1849 the Cape Hunt was formed with Mr John Proctor as first Master. In 1936 the Cape Hunt Club amalgamated with the Cape Peninsula Polo Club. Foxhounds originally from The Duke of Beaufort. Periodic imports from various English hunts. Since 1967 its been a drag hunt.
The country lies within Wheatlands and Winelands in Western Cape Town with varying terrain. The length of the drag lines vary but are usually around 20 km with six or seven checks with differing obstacles. The Hunt Card is available in March each year to enable visitors to decide over which areas they would prefer to hunt.
