History of the Hunt

History:	Carrollton Hounds was originally founded by Harry Straus around 1935. Mr. Strauss was the inventor of an electromechanical totalisator used to calculate pari-mutuel odds, issue tickets and show payouts at racetracks in the early 1900s. Mr. Strauss was killed in a plane crash at the age of 53 in 1949. Without Mr. Straus’ resources and leadership Carrollton Hounds stagnated and the formal organization ceased to exist. Around 1975 Carrollton Hounds was reconstituted by Bub Smith, Edna McNemar, Colonel Donald Thackery and others. It has operated since then due to the tremendous hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of landowners in the Carroll and Frederick County area.
