History: | Originally known as the True Blue Hunt, it was started by the Rev W Philips, of Cattistock Lodge, who hunted the country until 1806. Mr J J Farquharson then assumed office, hunted the hounds at his own expense for more than half a century until 1859, from which year the country as now constituted is considered to date. Among many great Masterships of these Hounds have been those of Parson Milne and Henry Higginson, an American. |
Hunt Country: | The country, which lies in Dorset with a small portion in Somerset, extends 27 miles in greatest length north west to south east, by 15 miles in breadth. On the north it adjoins the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale, on the west the Seavington and on the east the South Dorset; to the south is the sea. Much is still grass, on rolling chalk hills with two grass vales, the Hardington Vale and Rhyme Valley, both having stout fences with ditches. The remainder of the country holds a variety of fencing: timber, Hunt jumps, and walls in the south. Best centres: Maiden Newton, Evershot, Beaminster, Yeovil, Dorchester. |
