History of the Hunt

Start Year: 2002
End Year: N/A
History: The Chilmark Beagles (1950-2002) were founded in 1950 by Charles E Hardwick of Chilmark Park, Salisbury, hunting south and west of the city as far down as Cranbourne Chase. Mr Hardwick was joined in the mastership in 1961 by George Harland, a Glastonbury solicitor and they registered, in their name, the abandoned Downside Abbey country. This gave them most of Mendip south of the A368 (Bath to Weston Road) and much of the moorland around Glastonbury. For a number of years they ran the two countries separately but eventually the Harland family, George, his wife and their two sons, Andrew and Philip, with hounds kennelled at Tor, had enough country to restrict the Hunt activity to Somerset. The Wiltshire country is now on loan to the Wiltshire & Infantry Beagles. Alan Hughes joined the mastership in 1973 and saw the pack through some difficult years. In 1991 "Jim" Squires took over; Richard Chesterton joined him for two seasons. In 1993, hounds were arranged to be kennelled with the Mendip Farmers foxhounds. Mrs Andrews (mother of Johnny Andrews, Chairman of the AMHB) became joint master. In 1995 Iona Baber and E Hobbs joined the mastership. Under Jim Squires the pack did exceptionally well on the flags as well as on the field, always being well endowed with rosettes at Peterborough, Harrogate, Ardingly, Honiton and Builth. Eventually, by the end of 2001 under various pressures, Jim Squires decided that foxhunting was to be his future and that he would be giving up the Beagles. In spite of advertisements appealing for a Master, Huntsman, no suitable responses were received and the Clifton, with constant encroaching development onto their country, suggested a combination of interests.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The 2002 merger between the Chilmark and the Clifton opened up a vast new territory, from the Bristol Avon to Sedgemoor and from the Bristol Channel to the Fosse Way, retaining some arable land in Gloucestershires Berkeley country, which has traditionally produced excellent sport. Best centres: Bristol; Bath; Cheddar; Chew Magna; Clevedon; Glastonbury; Wells; Weston-super-Mare (Somerset); Dursley and Stroud (Glos).
