History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1982
End Year: N/A
History: The North Northumberland history can be traced back to the Berwickshire Hunt (which was started in about 1790) whose Northumberland country was hunted by George Grey of Millfield from ca 1881-83 and The Hon F W Lambton from 1884-88, with the Glendale country (see Bailys 1907-08 and earlier). The Berwickshire Hunt name was changed to the Northumberland and Berwick in 1898 and to the NBH in 1904 (see Bailys 1905-06 and earlier). Sir James Miller hunted the country from 1897 until his death in 1906, when the NBH country was divided, and the North Northumberland Hunt was formed to take over the Northumberland portion. The College Valley Hunt was started in 1924 when Capt Sir Alfred L Goodson and Capt Hon Claude Lambton hunted the Cheviot Hill country on loan from the Committee of the North Northumberland; and also hill country from the Border and the Duke of Buccleuchs. The College Valley and North Northumberland was formed in 1982.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country covers an area of about 25 miles east to west by 20 miles north to south, and at least half is white grass and heather with interspersed forestry. It is very rideable, being dry, and is fairly well gated and jumped. The west side of the low country is semi-pasture but the east side is nearly all arable. A good thoroughbred is the horse for the hills. Best centres: Cornhill-on-Tweed (Coldstream), Berwick-on-Tweed, Wooler and Yetholm.
