History of the Hunt

History:	The Hunt dates from 1858, in which year Lord Fitzhardinge ceased to hunt the whole of his very extensive territory (the present Berkeley, Cotswold and North Cotswold countries), and gave over the new Cotswold Hunt the whole of the present North Cotswold country and the whole of the present Cotswold country with the exception of the portion of the vale lying on the left of the road from Cheltenham to Tewkesbury. This reserved portion was finally handed over to the Cotswold Hunt in 1889. The Cotswold Hunt gave up the Broadway portion of their country in 1867, which then became the North Cotswold country.

Hunt Country:

The country, which covers some 17 miles north to south and about 15 miles east to west, lies in Gloucestershire. The country runs from Winchcombe to Cirencester Park (VWH) and along the Fosseway to Guiting Power; apart from Chedworth Woods coverts are a fairly handy size and open country for the chase is light going. Recent farming rotations have resulted in more uncropped areas during the winter. On Thursdays to the west there is more woodland in long valleys or in large beech woods; or grass hills and a variety of country is seen: Cleeve Common is a feature. Best centre: Cheltenham, whence also meets of the North Cotswold, VWH, Berkeley, Croome, and Ledbury can be reached.
