History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1666
End Year: N/A
History: The first records appear to be of hounds being taken down by road from Lowther (Westmorland, now Cumbria) by Viscount Lowther for the purpose of hunting the Cottesmore country, 1666-95. These hounds were subsequently sold to Tom Noel, from which time regular records of the hounds began. The pack remained in the Noel family till 1788, when Sir Wm Lowther purchased them and hunted the country till 1802. In Sir Gilbert Heathcotes time the hounds were kennelled at Normanton Park. After the death of Sir Wm Lowther (1st Earl of Lonsdale) his hounds were sold, and Sir Richard Sutton brought his own pack from the Burton. Sir John Trollope (afterwards Lord Kesteven) hunted the whole country with the Bicester pack borrowed from Mr Drake. Afterwards Lord Kesteven collected a pack of his own, which was purchased by Lord Lonsdale in 1876. Lord Carrington hunted the country four days a week. The hounds were purchased in 1880 by W C Gosling, and were presented by him to the country.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire, is about 18 miles north to south and 22 miles east to west. Best centres: Oakham, whence meets of the Quorn and Belvoir may also be reached; Melton and the north west corner, where the Cottesmore, Belvoir and Quorn converge.
