History of the Hunt

History:	The pack was founded in 1808 by Richard Hill, who hunted the hounds himself until 1855. At his death John Hill took over the hounds, but sold them in 1862 to the Duke of Grafton. Mr Harcourt Johnstone formed a fresh pack in the same year. Among memorable Masterships is that of Charles Chafer, who was Master and Huntsman from 1946 to 1974, and who died on 21 July 1999.

Hunt Country:

The country is in North Yorkshire and covers some 25 miles east to west. It is divided into Vale and high country by the A170, and is a mixture of arable, grass and forestry. Best centres are Pickering, Malton and Scarborough, from where it is easy to reach the Middleton, Sinnington and Staintondale Hunts.
