History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1855
End Year: N/A
History: Exmoor was hunted as a Royal Forest in Queen Elizabeth's time. The Ranger, Hugh Pollard, kept a pack at Simonsbath, and his successors continued to do so. For many years prior to 1775 the Acland family held the Mastership of these hounds. The pack became subscription in 1803; in 1812 Lord Fortescue hunted the country at his own charge. In 1825 the pack was sold out of the country; and thus the last of the true staghounds left England. In 1827 Sir Arthur Chichester formed a new pack, and hunted it till 1833, after which date the country remained unhunted till 1837, when Mr Palk Collyns reorganized the Hunt, and carried it on till 1841, when funds failed. The Hon Newton Fellowes kept the pack till 1847; he was followed by Sir A Chichester for one season, Mr Theobald afterwards holding office. In 1850 Geo Luxton brought a pack of Harriers to the country. In 1851 Capt West held office, followed by Mr Carew, who resigned in 1853 to Capt West again. Mr Fenwick followed in 1855, when he adopted the name of Bisset. See Staghunting on Exmoor, by Hon J Fortescue, Staghunting with the Devon and Somerset (1902), by P Everard (Chatto & Windus), and The Devon and Somerset Staghounds, 1907-1936, by E T MacDermot (Collins).

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The Devon and Somerset historically hunted the Wild Red deer in either county. The hunt today continue to manage the herd by hunting within the law. In practice, their territory extends from the River Taw in the west to the Parrett in the east; a line east to west through Tiverton marks the approximate boundary on the south; the Bristol Channel lies on the north. The hunted tract consists chiefly of moor and woodland and extends 50 miles east to west by 30 miles north to south. The Tiverton district south of the old A361 is lent to the Tiverton Staghounds. The eastern end of the country, consisting mainly of the Quantock Hills, is lent to the Quantock Staghounds. Best centre: Exford.
