History of the Hunt

History: The pack was given to the country by H ffiske on his retirement from the Mastership. The Shotesham Harriers, which originally hunted this district, were established by Mr Fellowes, MFH, Warwickshire, 1826-30. In 1857 Charles Race hunted the country a subscription pack.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, in South Norfolk is about 25 miles by 30 miles, extending from Watton and Thetford in the West to Diss and Harleston in the South, Lodden in the East and Norwich to the North. Neighbouring packs: the Waveney and North Norfolk Harriers and the West Norfolk and Suffolk Foxhounds. It is largely flat and for the most part arable land growing wheat, barley, sugar beet and oil seed rape. Nevertheless it is delightfully varied with autumn stubbles, a little grass, some woodland and with ditches in large parts of it. Modern day farming methods have resulted in grass margins making for easier going than the plough of earlier years. The land is alternately light and heavy in equal distribution. Beautiful permanent set aside land within our country is also worthy of mention.
