History: | The Hunt dates from 1820, since when no change has been made in its boundaries. Landowners, owners of coverts within the limit of the Hunt, and subscribers of not less than the minimum annual subscription are eligible as members of the East Essex Hunt Club, founded 1900, to promote and encourage foxhunting in the country. |
Hunt Country: | The country, which extends some 23 miles north to south and 16 miles east to west, lies in north west and east Essex. It is mostly arable and the ploughs can ride very heavy in the wet. There is little woodland but a fair proportion of both rotational and permanent grass, particularly on the marshes. A strong clever jumper able to gallop through the deep and to negotiate wide ditches and post and rails is the most suitable horse. Best centres: Braintree and Halstead. Adjoining Hunts: to the west the Essex; to the north west the Thurlow; to the north east the Suffolk; to the east the Essex & Suffolk; and to the south the Essex Farmers & Union. |
