History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1858
End Year: N/A
History: The Eggesford country is practically that hunted from 1858 onwards by Lord Portsmouth. It was first hunted by the Hon. Newton Fellowes in 1798. It was hunted from 1854 to 1858 by Robert George Luxton, Lord Portsmouth taking the country in 1858. R.G. Luxton, father of A.W. Luxton, then sold his pack to Lord Poltimore and that was the foundation of Lord Poltimore's pack, which made a high price. It was thenceforward known by his name. In 1858 or 1859 he gave up the Dulverton portion to Mr. Foude Bellew, and in 1875 the late Hon. Mark Rolle parted with a portion of the country, which was then known as the Eggesford, to allow for the formation of the Dulvertion Hunt. During the 1895-96 season the Eggesford country, being vacant, was hunted by neighbouring Masters

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which extends some 19 miles east to west by about 20 miles north to south, lies in Devon. It is good hunting country, with some forestry commission, general deciduous copses, and lots of valleys, with very little jumping. Best centres: Eggesford and Okehampton.
