History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1884
End Year: N/A
History: The first record of hounds in this area is in 1785. In the mid-19th century, there were three packs hunting the country. One of them was Tommy Dobson, a bobbin maker, who was paid by farmers to visit their farms to cull the foxes. By 1857, he was able to devote himself entirely to hunting and he hunted hounds himself for nearly 50 more years. He was paid 10s 6d for each fox brush produced to the Ennerdale Court Leet. The Wasdale pack seems to have been absorbed in the 1880s and the Ennerdale about ten years later. In 1884 the hunt became a subscription pack. Tommy Dobson died in 1910 (at Little Langdale where the hounds were meeting). He left the hounds to Willie Porter, who had already been hunting them for some years. Since then, the Mastership has passed from father to son, with each generation acting as whipper-in and/or huntsman to the generation before. In 143 years, the pack has had only four Masters/huntsmen and one huntsman, Art Irving, 1944-62.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in West Cumbria, extends, roughly speaking from Ennerdale (north) to Coniston (south), and from Langdale (east) to Black Combe (west). The terrain consists of Lakeland fells. Adjoining Hunts: Melbreak, Blencathra and Coniston Foxhounds, and Black Combe Beagles. Best centres: Eskdale, Wasdale, Langdale, Bootle, Ennerdale and Broughton-in-Furness.
