History of the Hunt

History: The Hunt is reputed to have been started by Admiral Sir William Rowley with a pack of hounds purchased from the Duke of York in 1794. The pack was kept in kennels built by Sir William in Tendring Park, Stoke-by-Nayland, the remains of which still exist. The stabling for the horses was built nearer Sir Williams residence, Tendring Hall. Sir William was succeeded in the mastership in about 1808 by Mr Carrington Nunn who carried on for about 50 years before handing over to his nephew, Captain White, who built and moved hounds to new kennels in Stratford St Mary. During this period some other small packs of foxhounds, privately owned, operated in the area now hunted solely by the Essex & Suffolk, including those of Charles Newman and a pack known as Mr Bakers Hounds.

Hunt Country: The country, which extends about 25 miles north to south and the same east to west, lies in Essex and Suffolk. Best centres: Colchester, Ipswich, Hadleigh and Manningtree. From Colchester meets of the East Essex and from Ipswich meets of the Suffolk are also accessible.
