History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1790
End Year: 2018
History: The Hunt dates from around 1790. At one time it was tradition that hounds be light coloured so as to be more easily seen on the moors. Fox and hare used to be hunted up until the middle of the 19th Century, but now it is solely a registered foxhound pack.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country lies in North Yorkshire and is moorland and grassland in the valleys. Scenting is poor in the fields, but good on the moorland and in the forestry to the east of the country. Fields are small: no more than 10 on horseback, with mostly foot and car followers. Best centres: Castleton and Kirkbymoorside, whence meets of the Sinnington are accessible. A wonderful country to see and watch hounds work. Adjoining Hunts: to the west the Bilsdale; to the north the Cleveland; to the east the Goathland, and Saltersgate Farmers; and to the south the Sinnington. The hunt is mounted; sometimes on foot.
