History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1853
End Year: N/A
History: The Hunt was originally part of the Quorn, but as this country was too large to hunt properly, Sir Richard Sutton allowed his son Richard to hunt the Billesdon portion separately from 1853 (when it became known also as the Billesdon, or South Quorn country). This arrangement continued under Mr Tailby with the agreement of the Quorn. There was subsequently a dispute, which was settled, and the Quorn later relinquished all claim to the country. Long masterships in the latter halves of both the 19th and 20th centuries have helped to produce stable conditions.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country was all grass until World War II, and the best bullock grazing country, albeit always with more wire than elsewhere in Leicestershire. There is now a good deal of arable, particularly on the eastern side of the country, although there remain substantial pockets of grass and old turf west of the Harborough to Leicester road. The country remains very open with best conditions in the Gumley/Mowsley area where there is still plenty of grass and fly fences. Field boundaries consist of timber post and rails and thorn hedges, many guarded by ditches. Hunt jumps have been put in wherever necessary to give access. Well-spaced, thick blackthorn coverts ensure good holding cover. Heavy clay land can give deep going in a wet time.
