History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1735
End Year: N/A
History: The Hounds, in the middle of the eighteenth century, hunted hare or deer indiscriminately. Hounds were entered to the fox only when Charles, second Duke of Grafton, established a pack of foxhounds which were known by his name. The earliest reference to the Duke of Graftons hounds is in the year 1735 when, according to the writer in the Sporting Magazine for Feb 1793, the Dukes hounds were hunting, strangely enough in Surrey, having kennels at Lovells Grove, Croydon, the seat of the Dukes friend, the Earl of Onslow. The probability is that the hounds were taken for part of the season, either from Euston Hall, the Dukes seat in Suffolk, or Wakefield Lodge near Towcester. The extract reads as follows: "About the year 1735 he (the second Duke) kept fox-hounds at Croydon and went to London very early on the days he hunted. The old Duke used to complain bitterly of the interruption he met with (in crossing the Thames at Westminster) for the delay and inattention of the ferry man, etc, by which he often lost several hours of a fine morning before he arrived in Croydon. To remove this inconvenience he projected a bridge at Westminster, and brought a bill into Parliament for its erection, which was completed in the year 1748." This is supported by the fact that for many years there hung at Euston Hall a contemporary painting by Canaletto, depicting the bridge in the course of construction. When Lord Southampton hunted the country from 1842-61, the pack was known as Lord Southamptons; when Lord Penrhyn took over from the sixth Duke, it was arranged that they be called the Grafton Hounds, with hounds the property of the Duke of Grafton. The seventh Duke gave hounds to the country.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which extends 18 miles east to west and 16 miles north to south, is situated in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, centred on the town of Towcester. The Saturday country, based on Brackley, retains fine areas of pasture which have been well maintained for hunting. The Tuesday country in the north-west is a mixture of arable and grassland with large areas of woodland centred on Whittlewood Forest. There are a large number of well-kept coverts throughout. A vigorous fence-building programme has added to the large number of formidable natural fences and ensures that the country remains open. A bold horse with plenty of stamina is required. Adjacent Hunts: the Pytchley to the north, where there is a small area of shared country round Charwelton; the Oakley to the east; and the Bicester with Whaddon Chase to the west and south. There is no longer any hunting to the east of the A5. Best centres: Towcester, Buckingham and Brackley.
