History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1617
End Year: N/A
History: The Pack, which has been kennelled at Holcombe for over 200 years, is one of the oldest in the country. The origin of the hounds is said to be the blue-mottled Chien de Gascogne, the oldest strain of hound in France, whose music is particularly pleasing, with a deep rich note. Much care and thought has been expended in order to keep this ancient strain in existence, but owing to losses during the two World Wars, the blue mottled strain has become so attenuated that a proportion of Stud Book Harriers has been introduced. In the year 1617 the Holcombe Pack was taken to Houghton Tower on the occasion of the King James I visitation, when His Majesty graciously granted the Royal Warrant to hunt over 12 townships, and the privilege of wearing the Scarlet Livery of the King. The Hunt was granted a Coat of Arms in 1985 bearing the motto "Hunting and conserving".

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country covers the greater part of Lancashire, and is very varied, from stone-walled moorland in the east, with central hedge and fence grassland, to ditched fenland in the west. Best centres: Affetside, Ashworth Valley, Helmshore, Heskin, Croston and Brindle to name but a few.
