History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1845
End Year: N/A
History: The Hunt dates from 1845, when foxes were imported into the island and a pack of foxhounds established by a few gentlemen, of whom Ben Cotton was the leading spirit, Henry Nunn assisting him. John Harvey, of Marvel, supplied the kennels. The hounds for a short time were kennelled at Afton House, Freshwater. The kennels were at Marvel, save during A Davenports Mastership, 1864-65, when they were at Appuldurcombe, and the seasons 1877-79, when Ben Cotton had them at Afton House. New kennels were built by J Willis Fleming near Wootton, and the hounds moved to them on 1 May, 1920. They were moved from Wootton to Gatcombe Kennels, built by a Hunt Syndicate, in 1927. Prior to 1845 the country was hunted by the Crockford Harriers, kennelled at Marvel; this pack was sold entire and became the Prince of Wales Harriers in about 1845.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country is varied and covers approximately 20 miles by 15 miles; hounds can hunt right down to the sea. It is primarily a hill country with extensive chalk downland giving breathtaking views across the coast and sea. There are areas of forest centrally, and vale to the north on the clay land which carries the better scent. The fences are mostly timber with hedges in the north. There are plenty of foxes on the island which were introduced from the mainland in the last century along with the badger, both of which are thriving. Everything from thoroughbreds to shetlands follow the Isle of Wight Hounds but the ideal horse is a three-quarter bred with bone and speed to cope with the steep downland, hills, and the mud in the lowlands. Best centres: Ryde, Newport, Shanklin, Sandown and Freshwater. The west tip of the island is not hunted due to the sheer cliffs.
