History of the Hunt

History: Although there are records to show that the Kildare Hunt Club existed as long ago as 1766, there were in those days other packs hunting the country, notably the Bishopscourt Hunt. Squire Conolly (1793) is the first recorded Master, but Sir John Kennedy (1814-41) may be called the father of the Hunt. By increasing the Hunt�s coverts from 18 to 49, he laid the foundation of the 90 varied draws available today. A portion of the Carlow Country adjoining the southern boundary, and mostly situated in Co Kildare, is on loan on a year-to-year basis.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country lies in Co Kildare and the borders of West Wicklow as far as the mountains, with a few coverts in Co Meath and Co Dublin. It is of irregular shape, at its longest 36 miles north to south and 22 miles east to west, and some 450 square miles are hunted. Best centres: Dublin and Naas.
