History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1797
End Year: N/A
History: The Hunt dates from the year 1797, when John Power (Sir John Power, Bt, 1836) brought a pack of foxhounds from Tipperary and, settling at Derrynahinch, near Ballyhale, established the Hunt in conjunction with his brother Richard. This pack, being then the only established county pack in the south of Ireland, hunted all Co Kilkenny, Co Carlow as far as Tullow, and Coollattin in Co Wicklow, occasionally in Co Wexford, and the Durrow Woods in Queen's County. The country as now constituted has existed since 1894. In 1908, the kennels were moved from Knocktopher Abbey when Isaac Bell built kennels at Birchfield; the Hunt resumed the Castlecomer country in 1909 (see Laois Hunt). Mr Bell then built new kennels at Brownstown. On taking over the hounds in 1921, Major McCalmont built new kennels at his own place, Mount Juliet. In 1931 the Castlecomer and Freshford areas were lent by the Committee to John Alexander and on his resignation in 1934 it was loaned to the newly formed North Kilkenny Hunt. In 1976 the south-west of the county, which had been on loan since 1918 to the Kilmoganny Hunt, was ceded to them. A history of the Kilkenny Hunt, Hunting in County Kilkenny, was published in June 1999 by Caroline Corballis.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in Co Kilkenny, is about 45 miles long by 30 miles wide, with stone walls south of Thomastown and thick bank country in the north.
