History: | There is evidence that hunting took place in County Laoise since the late eighteenth century. A hunt of some forty miles was recorded in 1816 by the Emo hounds from the Heath to Athy, co Kildare. The Queens country was formed in 1850 by the amalgamation of the Emo hunt and the Ossory hunt. In 1899 certain coverts were ceded by the Kilkenny Hunt to Mr Prior Wandersforte to be hunted by him, the remainder consisting of most of the old Queens Country Hunt country. Mr Prior Wandersforte retired in 1902, lending his hounds to the country. In 1940 the name was changed to the Queens Country and Castlecomer Hunt. In 1900, the Kilkenny (Castlecomer) portion having been taken back by the Kilkenny Hunt, the name was changed to the Queens Country. In 1918 the whole country formerly hunted by Queens Country Hunt was taken over, including that which was hunted by the late Mr Assheton Biddulph, MFH, Kings Country. |
Hunt Country: | The country lies in Queen's County and is very varied, including banks, stone walls and forestry, with going that is usually heavy. Adjoining Hunts: the North Kilkenny, Carlow Farmers, and Ormond, the Golden Vale and the Kildare Hounds. Best centres: Rathdowney and Newtown Cross. |
