History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1723
End Year: N/A
History: The earliest record discoverable shows that Mr Nicholson, of Balrath, kept a pack of foxhounds in 1723, and hounds were kept by the Nicholson family till the beginning of the 19th century. Mr Lowther and Mr Hopkins also kept packs. Historically, however, the most important hunting establishments in Co Meath were those of Mr Pollock, of Mountainstown, and Mr Gerrard, of Gibbstown. In 1813 Messrs Pollock and Gerrard joined packs with kennels at the Castle of Clongill, as the Clongill Hunt, with a subscription, Mr Pollock being Master. At first the Clongill hunted only the north end of the country, but by degrees absorbed the whole. In 1817 the Clongill Hunt became the Meath Hunt. The "Dublin country", practically speaking, was made by S Reynell. During the War part of the country was lent to the Louth and Ballymacad Hunts. This arrangement is still partly in operation.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country most of County Meath. Best centres: Navan, Kells, Trim. Grassland and tillage.
