History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1807
End Year: N/A
History: The pack takes its name from the fell which stands on the west shore of Crummock Water. From the early part of the 18th century trencher-fed hounds were maintained in the country, but the Melbreak was first assembled as a pack in 1807 by William Pearson, and has been kennelled in the Loweswater area for over 150 years. The pack, which hunts on foot, provides an interesting example of a well-balanced Fell pack, which by careful selection is bred to suit the local hunting conditions. The pack remained privately owned for many years, but was eventually made into a voluntary subscription pack in 1917, on the retirement of John Benson, who presented the pack to a committee "for the benefit of the country".

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in west Cumbria, extends from the River Derwent in the north to Ennerdale Lake in the south. It is mountainous country, round the Buttermere and Loweswater Valleys. Best centres: Loweswater, Cockermouth, Lorton and Buttermere. Adjoining packs: to the north the Cumberland; to the east the Blencathra; to the south the Eskdale & Ennerdale; to the west lies the sea.
