History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1604
End Year: N/A
History: The first records of the Mid Devon date from 1604, but unfortunately the book was destroyed by fire at Furlong, the residence of the Bragg family. The country was hunted from that time up to the 1st World War, the Master, Capt Huntriss, being called up to join his regiment. The Hunt was carried on for two seasons and then closed down. Major A C Arden hunted this country with a pack called the South Devon (North) season 1936, loaned from the South Devon Hunt. The Mid Devon Hunt was restarted on May 1, 1937, subsequent to a ruling of the MFHA of January 1937.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country is the north east quarter of Dartmoor and some way off the moor towards Exeter. The hunt boundary runs from Postbridge along the Dart/Okement rivers to Okehampton, east to Yeoford, south to Cheriton Bridge and Steps Bridge on to the Teign and then along to the Exeter/Tavistock road back to Postbridge. Saturdays are normally on Dartmoor, where the only jumping is stone walls around Postbridge, but instant take-offs over holes, rocks, and wet patches on the moor. Tuesdays are characterised by smallish fields and hunt gates, recommended to those who want to watch hounds work rather than gallop for miles. A half bred is best suited, but some thoroughbreds cope well. The Mid Devon shows good sport in all sorts of weather: a long barbour and a crash cap are prescribed. Best Centres: Chagford, Belstone and Postbridge.
