History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1907
End Year: N/A
History: Established 1907. Recognized 1909. Hounds went out 56 times last season. A representative group of Millbrook Foxhunters organized and incorporated The Millbrook Hunt. The date was December 14th, 1927. Twenty- three couples of American hounds were purchased in Virginia by Elias Chadwell who came to Millbrook as Huntsman. Augmented by 14-1/2 couples as gifts from other packs, these hounds became the foundation of the pack we have today. Earl Chadwell succeeded his father as Hunstman in August 1950. Hunting in Millbrook has continued in the same tradition over much of the same country to this day with hounds going out 65 - 85 days per year depending on the winter weather. An interesting footnote to this history is that The Millbrook Hunt had only four huntsmen from 1927 - 2020: Elias Chadwell to 1950, his son Earl to 1978, Betsy Park to 2004, Donald Philhower from that date through 2019. Erin McKenny became huntsman in 2020. Since 1927 Millbrook has always had American foxhounds, but beginning in 1980, Crossbreds were introduced with drafts from Midland, notably Midland Dancer in 1981. The pack evolved as an American 6 and Crossbred pack with occasional outcross from Penn-Marydel lines. In 2004, Donald Philhower brought a number of Penn-Marydel hounds to Millbrook.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The Country is approximately 10 by 23 miles. A grass country, with some woodland and little plough. Fences are of timber, composed of post-and-rails and stone walls with riders, and coops.
