History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1742
End Year: N/A
History: Oldest foxhound hunt in Ireland. In 1742, John Rye, of Rye Court, kept foxhounds, which he handed over to the subsequent masters. Hounds became the property of the Earl of Bantry in around 1839, with hounds lent to the Committee, and it became a subscription pack on 10th June of that year. Lord Bantry sold the hounds in 1843, and Capt Richard Tonson Rye got together a pack of his own and hunted the country for 28 years, except 1866-87, when Sir Augustus Warren filled his place. Capt Rye greatly enlarged the country and hunted three days a week, in place of two as formerly. The hounds were kennelled at Farnanes. In 1871, Capt Woodley became Master, Capt Rye lending the hounds and in 1881, hunting having become impossible owing to agrarian trouble, the hounds were sold and went to the South of France. Hunting resumed in 1883, and the Muskerry pack was maintained by the Cavalry regiment stationed at Ballincolling, each successive corps in turn taking over the hounds, and the regiment in garrison undertaking to hunt the country, keep up coverts and pay all damages, etc. On 10th June 1889, at a meeting of the Hunt held at Ballincollig, a Committee was formed, with Capt R Tonson Rye, Capt Woodley, T Lawless Pine, Capt J H Herrick, J Payne, Q Hawkes, T Sherrard and J J Harding, with Capt Herrick as Hon Sec. It now became a subscription pack, although for nine years longer the regiment owned and hunted them. In 1898 the 17th Lancers sold the hounds, and H Leader became master, forming a pack of his own which he hunted himself. They were kennelled at Forest during the latter part of his Mastership. After eight years he resigned in favour of T Donovan but continued to act as Huntsman until 1909, when the hounds were sold for a large sum to the Duhallow Hunt. Capt F C B West, of Rugby, was then Master for a season and was his own Huntsman. The Hunt bought hounds, this being the first time the Muskerry Hunt had ever owned them.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: Aghabullogue, Rusheen, Rylane, Aherla with many banks and drains. Adjacent packs: Macroom, Carbery, South Union, Avondhu, United and Duhallow.
