History of the Hunt

History: At the turn of the 20th century there were in existence two outstanding packs of Beagles, the Halstead Place and the Stoke Place. From the best strains of these packs the late Sir Frederick Fitzwygram bred this Leigh Park pack. Upon his early death in 1920 following war wounds, the pack was bought by Capt Keith Gladstone, and brought to the New Forest. In 1928 the pack was bought by the committee and Ernest Day was appointed Master. During the war eight couple were kept together and the priceless strains preserved.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The original country is mainly moorland, with a great variation of bog and young coppice involving a wide spread of the total area of the New Forest. In 1992 the major part of the old Chilmark country was taken over and registered. This enables hunting to take place across farmland stretching from Damerham near Fordingbridge to the outskirts of Salisbury. In addition, meets are arranged at Broadlands, and other farming estates close to Romsey, all by invitation. Trail Hunting is now well established enabling the Hunt to utilise with equal success the Forest in the first half and farmland in the second.
