History of the Hunt

History:	The country has been hunted at intervals by various packs since 1871, when Lord Suffield started the North Norfolk Harriers. When Lord Suffield gave up in 1875, Col H A Barclay, and afterwards his brother, E E Barclay (later MFH, Puckeridge), hunted the country round Cromer till 1887. Then Mr F Ives had a pack for two years and E D Spurrell for one, B Bond Cabbell, of Cromer Hall, following them for one season. For a short time prior to 1891 there were no hounds; in 1891 T O Springfield established a pack which was known by his name for one season, then as the Baconsthorpe, and later as the North Norfolk. Hounds were dispersed among various regiments during the 1914-18 war and reformed in 1920 by Lt Col J F Barclay. Hounds were kennelled at the home of their senior Master until 1961, when the Hunt was taken over by a Committee and hounds moved to their present kennels.

The hounds hunt an area 290 miles square in North Norfolk. Best centres: North Walsham, Aylsham, Reepham, and Holt. The country is nearly all plough, mostly light with banks and ditches. No foxhounds hunt this country, but the West Norfolk Foxhounds are adjacent on the West.
