History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1835
End Year: N/A
History: The Hunt was established in 1835 to hunt sambhur, but has hunted only jackal since 1845. The country consists of the old Ooty Downs, an area of about 50 square miles at an elevation of between 7,000 to 7,500 feet. It comprises rolling grass lands divided by deep bogs and streams. There are many man-made crossings to make the country rideable, and to ride it well full use must be made of contours. Hasten slowly is a good motto. Unfortunately, afforestation with eucalyptus and pine is going on, with barbed wire fencing making it difficult to follow hounds. The Ooty Hunt is almost exclusively supported and patronised by members of the three armed forces and, at the moment, all its Hunters are the property of the Defence Services Staff College.
