History of the Hunt

History:	The Hunt dates from 1857, when Mr Farquharson gave up the country. The 2nd Lord Portman, who died in 1919, had been Master and Field Master since July 1858.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country:

The country stretches from Gillingham and Shaftesbury in the north to Wimborne in the south, and from Cranborne in the east to Milton Abbas in the west. The Wednesday and Saturday vales are well-fenced with upstanding thorn hedges and ditches; it is great galloping country. The hill country is well-fenced, too, with timber. Hunting continues until the first week in April. Adjoining Hunts: to the west the Blackmore & Sparkford Vale; to the north the South & West Wilts; to the north east the Wilton; and to the south the South Dorset.
