History of the Hunt
| Start Year: | 1725 |

| History: | The Hunt dates back to 1725 when hounds were kept at Cheshunt and the country was also that of the Hertfordshire (see Bailys 1969-70). The country, as now constituted, has existed since 1799. In 1970 the Puckeridge amalgamated with the Newmarket and Thurlow to form the Puckeridge & Thurlow; but in 1992 this union was dissolved and the re-established Puckeridge reverted to its old boundaries. The Mastership has been in the Barclay family continuously for over a hundred seasons. |
Hunt Country
| Hunt Country: | The country covers some 19 miles north to south and 22 miles east to west in the counties of Herts, Essex and Cambs. A bank and ditch and plough country, it is poor scenting; but the wetter it is, the better the scent lies. A well-bred horse is required, clever at banks and blind ditches and able to gallop through the deep. Best centres: Bishops Stortford, from which also meets of the Essex are accessible, Saffron Walden to the north and Buntingford near the centre of the country. Adjoining Hunts: to the north the Thurlow; to the east and south east the Essex; and to the north and south the Cambridgeshire with Enfield Chace. |
