History of the Hunt

History:	The red deer on the Quantocks were not hunted at all until the time of Mr. Fenwick-Bisset, a very keen sportsman who from 1855 to 1881 held the mastership of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds and it was not until the year 1865 that hunting the Quantocks became a regular institution, hounds going there once or twice in a season for a fortnight or so at a time About the year 1893 considerable discussion took place as to the advisability or inadvisability of establishing a regular pack for the country, finally in 1895, Mr. Sunders became master of the Devon and Somerset, he succeeded in persuading Sir John, Amory to establish a pack of staghounds to hunt the Tiverton country where the red deer bad increased very largely in numbers, and this pack later on went often to the Quantocks by invitation, reports having spread that the herd there had grown out of all proportion, and complaints having been made by one or two of the principal landowners that the deer had done much mischief-a statement emphatically denied by certain other landowners. The next trustworthy record we have of the history of the Quantocks stag·hunting, dates back to the year 1901, when Mr. E. A. V. Stanley of Quantock Lodge obtained leave of the master of the Devon and Somerset to start a pack expressly to hunt the Quantock Hills. This pack Mr. Stanley himself hunted, and the sport he showed was of the best, so much so that the field soon began steadily to increase in size, and the master of the Devon and Somerset is said to have expressed some regret at having so readily agreed to allow the Quantocks to be hunted by '' an alien pack."
