History: | The pack was formed in December 1940 by C H Jenner, then Bursar of the College, and a few boys. It continued to hunt throughout the war and in 1947 the pack gained a proper foundation for the improvements that followed. In 1971 the pack was taken over by a committee and continued hunting as normal until more recent times. In 1997, Albert Hickson was employed as Kennel Huntsman and quickly began to make significant changes. Much of the Radley country was unhunted, but within two years Mr Hickson had opened up nearly all areas that were huntable. The standard of hunting began to improve greatly and support for the beagles began to increase. He added fundraising events to the calendar and the Hunt began to thrive in all areas. His main initiative was to revamp the breeding policy to help raise the hunting standard. Mainly using draft hounds kindly given by the Dummer Beagles, he was able to find the old Radley lines in the blood of the Dummer, Newcastle and District and Wick and District. Success at hound shows has become common place. Development of the area around Radley has made it necessary to hunt further away from the College. Hounds hunt twice a week, with visiting tours during College holidays. |
Hunt Country: | The country lies mainly in Oxfordshire in the Thames Valley and in the Vale of the White Horse between Oxford in the North, Wallingford in the East, Wantage in the South and Faringdon in the West. Best centres are Bampton, Faringdon, Wantage and Witney. Adjacent packs: Christchurch and Farley Hill, Eton College and Palmer Marlborough. |
