History: | The Rand Hunt was established shortly after the discovery of the Rand Goldfields in 1886. The pack is predominantly made up of Fell hounds, imported from the Blencathra, with a recent infusion of some College Valley and VWH blood, these latter two both having a line back to the Blencathra. In the early 1970s a Welsh hound came in from the Pentyrch. This move revitalised the packs cry. These hounds cope very well with the dry, hot and hard conditions in which they hunt. Very few natural jumps still exist and hunt jump building is an important part of the off season. |
Hunt Country: | The country lies to the north of Johannesburg where the main hunts are held. Encroaching urbanisation has necessitated trucking to outside venues such Ven Reenen, Vrede and Frankfort in the Freestate, Scheerpoort and Hekpoort in the North West province and Walkerville south of Johannesburg. Terrain is primarily grasslands and bushveld. Cross country jumps make up most of the obstacles. Jump building is an important part of land preparation. Thoroughbreds are best suited to drag hunting for both their speed and ability to cope with the hard conditions. |
