History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1863
End Year: N/A
History: Initially a harrier pack but when the Tremelet pack disbanded in 1901, hounds hunted fox. At the end of the 1905 season the hounds were put upon the market, with every prospect of their being entirely lost to the country, Early in the last century pack was under the management of Mr. Vinnicombe; then came Mr. Tom Potter, after whom Mr. John Gould was Master. Then came Mr. Charles Player. During his Mastership the kennels at Fairhayes were entirely consumed fire and the whole pack was lost. Following this cruel blow a few couples were collected by kindred spirits, and kept as a trencher fed pack until 1864, when the late Mr. Tom Webber put the pack upon firm basis, and continued at the head of the Hunt for years. Succeeding Mr. Webber came Mr. Roweil, who followed closely his predecessor's footsteps. He was succeeded by Mr. F. Cuming. It was on his resignation last Spring that the pack came into the market, as the new Master (Mr. Brunskill) brought his own pack of hounds on from the Exmoor country. This led to the old type of harrier being lost to the country by the introduction of foxhound blood. A considerable item in the new venture was the provision of suitable kennels at Drew's Cleve, not far from Stoke Fost. These, with for the hunt horses, are nicely arranged, roomy, and can hardly fail healthy, seeing that the situation is one from which magnificent views can be obtained from the Black Down Hills in the north-east, to the rugged outlines of Dartmoor on the western horizon. Archie Pape, from the Four Burrow was engaged to take charge of the pack. Of the twenty-five couple so taken over by Mr. Charles Wilcocks and Mr. Godfrey, only six couple of the old pack are retained. The rest have been put one side unsuitable, and their places were filled by some excellent drafts from the Axe Vale, the Taunton Vale and Cotley packs
