History of the Hunt

History: The Brocklesby seem to have hunted the country about two months in the season from kennels at Ketsby up to 1759; thereafter to 1820 it was hunted at intervals by trencher-fed harriers, which hunted fox and hare. From 1820-22 the hounds were called the Gillingham, and were kept at Scremby by Mr Brackenbury. In 1822 hounds were kennelled at Hundleby and were then called the South Wold. The country as now constituted has existed since 1841. Permanent kennels were built in 1857 at Belchford, with houses for the Hunt staff; these are the property of the Hunt. Miss D Brackenbury kept a small pack for breeding during the Second World War and hunted occasionally on the east side, and Mr Leslie Butcher carried on the west side of the country, maintaining a good pack of hounds. Mr F Dawson took over the east side in 1945 with E Parry as Huntsman and E Wiltshire as Whipper-in, and kennelled the hounds at Burwell for two seasons. Hounds were moved back to the kennels at Belchford, when they were de-requisitioned by the WAEC in the 1947-48 season. The pack was reunited again for 1948-49.

Hunt Country: The country lies entirely in Lincolnshire. Adjoining Hunts: to the south west the Blankney; to the west the Burton; to the north west the Brocklesby; to the north is the Humber estuary; east and south lies the sea. Best centre: Horncastle, in the heart of the country.
