History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1690
End Year: N/A
History: The Hunt is probably the oldest pack of foxhounds in England, for the 5th Lord Arundell of Wardour Castle kept a pack of hounds exclusively to hunt fox between 1690 and 1700. The 6th Lord Arundell maintained them until his death in 1745, after which they were kept by his nephew till 1782, when they were sold to Hugo Meynell.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country lies in Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset, between Wylye, Fovant, Shaftesbury, Shepton Mallet, Bath, Westbury, Market Lavington and Tilshead. It has existed in its present form since 1868, when Colonel Everett joined the South Wilts and the West Wilts packs. Parts of the north and north-east of the country are loaned to the Mendip Farmers, the Avon Vale and the Royal Artillery (Salisbury Plain). The country is very varied. There are two grass vales, the Knoyle Vale mostly in Dorset, and the Witham Vale in Somerset. North of the A303 and south of the A30 are the downs, sheep and arable, with the Army Training Area on the north-east edge. Three big woodlands make up the variety: Great Ridge, north of the A303, Fonthill Abbey Woods, and Bradley Woods, on the Duke of Somersets estate.
