History of the Hunt

History:	Listed as Mr Spooner Harriers until 1953 Mr Clarence Spooner, took over the old Sperling Harriers from a committee in 1911. Mr. Spooner built up his fortune in trade, not as a drysalter, but as a draper in a very big way, Mr. Clarence Spooner remained Master of his hounds until 1925 after which his daughter, Miss Sylvia Spooner, took over until 1929.

Hunt Country:

The country consists of wild and open moorland, plus heavily wooded valleys and small grass enclosures. Off the moor fields are fenced by large, unnegotiable banks. The rivers Dart, Walkham, Tavy, Lyd and West Okement all rise within the boundaries. Best centre: Tavistock. Adjoining Hunts: to the west and north the Lamerton; to the north and east the Mid Devon; to the east the South Devon; to the south the Dartmoor; to the south west the East Cornwall.
