History of the Hunt

History: The Hunt dates from 1799, and the country as now constituted has existed since that date. In 1902 the hounds were moved from their old quarters at Cobham Court to kennels at Bookham, built for the Hunt by Lord Ashcombe and rented to the Hunt. In 1920 the kennels were moved to Okewood Hill, near Ockley.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country covers an area 35 miles west to east and 20 miles north to south, from Pirbright in the north west via Guildford and Dorking to Reigate in the north east, south to the outskirts of Gatwick Airport and Crawley, then spreading south westwards towards Hindhead and north back to Pirbright. Within this area lies the western reach of the North Downs with its chalk soil; clay farmland to the east and south east; sandy hills around Holmbury St Mary; Peaslake in the centre; and more sandy soil in the west. The hill country is heavily wooded, while the weald country south of Dorking is predominantly farmland with many timber fences as well as ditches and some hedges. A clever horse is required, able to negotiate steep ghylls and timber. Adjacent Hunts: to the east the Old Surrey Burstow & West Kent; to the south the Crawley & Horsham; to the west the Chiddingfold, Leconfield & Cowdray. Country to the north is not hunted.
