History: | As far as can be ascertained, the history of the Taunton Vale Harriers dates back to 1842, when the establishment was then known as the Taunton Hunt, this being before the Taunton Vale Foxhounds had come into existence. The first Master was a Bull, but the length of his tenure of office is not known. It seems that a Mr Carlett acted as honorary huntsman. Further details are lacking for a period of years until ]871, when Mr Lionel Pattons was Master. He had the hounds for a few seasons only, and in 1876 he established the Taunton Vale Foxhounds, of which pack he was the first Master, forming his new country by agreement with the adjoining hunts. Meantime, the Taunton Vale Harriers seemed to have some difficulty in finding anyone to take the hounds, and the Hunt was managed for some years by the mmittee. In 1883, however, Dr Edward Liddon became Master, retiring in 1897 aftcr 14 seasons. During this time the Hunt appears to have been placed on a more satisfactory basis. Finances were regularized, a minimum subscription was fixed, and the establishment benefited generally by this long and settled term of administration, and the bounds, which had previously been the private property of certain gentlemen the country, were now purchased by the Committee, in the name of Trustees |
