History of the Hunt

History: The Hunt was started in 1826 by Mr Assheton Smith, who collected a pack from fifteen different kennels, and hunted the country till his death in 1858, when his widow presented the hounds (120 couple) to the country. Owing to military operations the Hunt was closed down and hounds dispersed in 1942. Hunting was resumed in 1946 with another pack collected by J C Porter who provided new kennels at his farm at Sunnyhill. More recently, the kennels were moved to their current location outside Burbage.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country is in Wiltshire and Hampshire, and extends some 25 miles north to south by about 22 miles east to west, comprising Salisbury Plain on the south, Pewsey Vale in the centre and downland to the north and east; the Savernake Forest is within the country but permission to hunt there has been withdrawn.. In nearly every wire fence there is a jumping place. A well-bred horse that can gallop and jump timber is required. Since 1946 the Royal Artillery Hunt have been given permission to hunt in certain south western parts of the country jointly with the Tedworth on an annual agreement. Adjacent Hunts: the Royal Artillery (Salisbury Plain), the Duke of Beauforts, the Avon Vale, the Vine & Craven and the Hursley Hambledon. Best centres: Marlborough, Upavon and Pewsey.
