History of the Hunt

History:	Hunting in the Thurlow country dates back to the Stuart kings. The first Master of whom much is known was a Mr James Paton, 1770-1800. Squire Osbaldston hunted it in 1822, at which time it included much of the present Suffolk country. In 1884 the present country was formed as the Newmarket and Thurlow which continued until 1970 when it was amalgamated with the Puckeridge. The Hunt became the Thurlow in 1992.

The country is approximately 18 x 11 miles of rolling, mainly arable land. Adjacent Hunts: the Cambridgeshire Hunt to the west, the Puckeridge to the south west, the Essex and East Essex to the south east, and the Suffolk Hunt to the north east.
