History of the Hunt

Start Year: 2003
End Year: N/A
History: The South Herts Beagles were established in 1925 by C B Shepherd to hunt the country hunted prior to the Great War by Ronald Mavor, the Master of the Bushey Heath Beagles. In 1938 the pack came under the Joint Mastership of D D Bassett, MC, and Lt Col C W Grover, the former acquiring the hounds. The kennels near Radlett were disbanded, and the hounds kennelled by G Hartop at Beaumount Hall, Redbourn. By 1945 only 21/2 couple remained, and a fresh start was made with small drafts from outside, the original country still being hunted. In 1947 the Joint Masters retired and D D Bassett presented the hounds to the country. The Trinity Foot dates from 1862 when R G Hoare introduced a private pack of beagles to Cambridge. W E Currey, a Trinity College tutor, brought 18 couple of 15-inch beagles from his home in Ireland in 1867, and this established beagling firmly in Cambridge. In 1892, Viscount Milton organised the hunt so as to establish it on a continuous basis. By kind invitation, the Hunt has enjoyed an annual visit to Northumberland since 1888. In 2003, the two Hunts came together, the South Herts in order to ensure sufficient safe huntable country to continue into the 21st century; and the Trinity Foot to secure the continued promotion of beagling at Cambridge University. Following the enactment of the Hunting Bill 2005, hounds are experimenting with following an artificial trail and rabbit hunting. It is committed to campaigning for a repeal of the Act and to continuing its work monitoring and fostering the hare population within its country.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country is that of both hunts involved in the amalgamation and is not contiguous. The western part (the old South Herts country) was formerly shared with the Aldenham Harriers and is the Old Hertfordshire Foxhounds country. The effective area is now within a ten mile radius of Luton. The eastern part (the former Trinity Foot country) lies mainly to the north of Cambridge and has recently been extended to include part of the Fitzwilliam Hunt country, formerly registered to the Newmarket Beagles (now disbanded). The terrain is very varied.
